Questions of Manovich's article: What is actually augmented in Augmented Reality? What else can (we imagine to) be augmented?
Response:
Manovich says “but we do not necessarily have to think of immersion in the virtual and augmentation of the physical as opposites. On one level, whether we think of a particular situation as immersion or augmentation is simply a matter of scale – i.e. the relative size of a display.” In other words, the difference between the “Augmented Reality(AR)” and “Virtual Reality(VR)” is the scale of display, which means, the common part of both AR and VR is to combine “the false” with “the real.” So we can come up with many ideas about elements augmented in AR, from VR.
Considered the immersion in VR mainly intends to add new information to us, information is the core to be augmented to the AR. Only existing in human society, Information is distinguished from physical, tangible environment. It involves not only the news like some reports of traffic situation, or advertisements of top-5 selling books, but many other imaginative elements. For example, when you are walking on the way to your office at a Monday, you pick up your cell phone and turn on your cinema. It is completely different in it: the man who pass away with you are in an armor like Ironman; the women who is standing in front of the cross is swinging a pair of wings; the teenagers in a school bus are all with wrinkles.
Computer are doing the whole job of creating that image, and one of the goals of using AR is to build a new experience of feeling the surrounding. Besides entertainment, another way to add information to reality is navigation. No matter if you are shopping, traveling, or driving, augmented information can always help you to use the environment to the largest extent. The database can guild you to find out the most popular local cuisine, and avoid the traffic, as your device is located. As a result, the experience is changed by the extra information.
Images, sounds, and even holographic display and other technologies and elements can be considered as media of displaying information. More advanced the technology is, the more information can be delivered, and the more influence can be made in experience of reality. In the future, if the “tangible interfaces” as Manovich says, can be widespread, information will enhance the experience to the next level.
However, the over-advanced AR could also have negative influence. Suppose the extent to which media used to transport information evolve, contains all of physical elements around people. Like Manovich mentions, if all buildings are covered by display of information, and tangible interfaces are available on the surface of our surroundings, the amount of added information will be extremely large. The information could interrupt, or even control experience, but not be helpful or fascinating anymore. Even though we can already see such scenes in many sci-fi films, the pace of creating more media of adding information never stops. The only thing that will not change is that more and more information will be augmented to reality. Final Project Document
